Andean Condors and Paramo Wildlife

Near Antisana National Park

Located only minutes from the entrance gate of Antisana National Park, Tambo Cóndor is an Indigenous-owned eco-lodge, restaurant, and birding destination in Ecuador’s highland paramo. Since 2011, Vladimir Ushiña and Verónica Amoguimba have hosted birdwatchers and other nature lovers to this wildlife sanctuary where condors soar above the cliffs and spectacled bears meander across scrub-covered slopes.

Exceptional Birding

Tambo Cóndor is home to an incredible diversity of birdlife, from the Andean Condor to several species of hummingbirds including Trainbearers, Violetears, and Giant Hummingbird.

Unparalled Wildlife

From Tambo Cóndor, you’re just minutes away from diverse highland habitats that attract a wide range of wildlife  — from Andean fox and small rabbits to Spectactled Bears and Andean Condors.

Focus on Nature

From soaring raptors to elusive mammals, Tambo Cóndor offers unforgettable moments for spotting wildlife at the lodge and nearby in Laguna de las Secas, Reserva Chakana, and Antisana National Park.

Our Lodge Provides Rustic Comfort

Stay at the lodge for the best chances to see and photograph wildlife during the quiet hours of dawn and dusk. With just a few cozy rooms, it’s often a peaceful, private experience — ideal for travelers seeking stillness and connection to nature.

Guided Tours

Experience the high páramo with a local guide who knows the land, the wildlife, and the quiet rhythms of this unique region. We recommend choosing one or two destinations per day — fewer if you’re here to photograph, hike distances, or simply take it all in.

Antisana National Park

Visit multiple habitats from paramo grasslands to the shores of Laguna Mica in this iconic highland park.

Chakana Reserve

A protected area managed for condor conservation, Chakana Reserve is a great place for observing wildlife in action.

Our Restaurant Serves Local Flavors

Enjoy traditional highland meals prepared with fresh, local ingredients at our cozy on-site restaurant. Dishes include Andean farm-raised trout, fresh cheese from nearby producers, and comforting favorites like locro de papas, a rich potato and cheese soup. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available most days; we recommend reservations to guarantee service.

Our Guests Recommend Staying the Night!

Our guests speak of quiet mornings, unforgettable wildlife, and the care they received from our family-run lodge. Each testimonial is paired with a hummingbird — a small reminder that every stay, like every bird, is special in its own way.

“We had amazing views of condors…”

Great location for visiting Antisana, overlooking the gorge and right opposite a Condor roosting site. We had amazing views of the Condors, and the hummingbirds visiting the feeders dotted around the property kept us entertained for hours…

“Highly recommend at least one night…”

Tambo Condor is an absolutely beautiful location, very reasonable prices, good quality food at the restaurant. The lodging is simple, but comfortable, with amazing views of the canyon… Tons of hummingbirds, and a great site to view the condors as well! Highly recommend staying at least one night here when visiting Antisana!

“This is not a 5-star hotel experience – it is much better than that.”

…Tambo Condor’s location is stunning, its lodge rustic but welcoming, warm and clean with a wonderful hearth and walls of windows to enable viewing of the hummingbird feeders and cliffs where the Andean Condors often roost. We had 4 meals at the lodge and they were excellent, featuring local crops prepared traditionally, as well as hearty main courses of more familiar fare…
